Like a lot of you, I’ve struggled with my weight for most of my adult life.
As a teenager, things weren’t so bad (I was young, and my metabolism was in high gear)! I had always been interested in nutrition, so I was somewhat cognizant of how many calories I was consuming. Now at the time, I didn’t really understand the importance of eating protein, carbs and fats in the right proportions; like most people, I just figured I had to eat in a caloric deficit.
At age 18, my husband and I got married, and a few years later at age 21, I got pregnant with our daughter. It was during this time that my weight struggles began. Back then, I was following the old adage that I was eating for two! I figured, this was the only time in my life that I could eat whatever I wanted because I needed the calories for the baby! If I only knew then what I know now!
After having my daughter, I was the heaviest I had ever been in my life. And like most, I would struggle for years to shed the pounds. For the next 15 years or so I did what most of you probably did, and that was unsuccessfully attempt different types of exercise and fad weight loss in the hopes that I would shed the pounds. I tried walking, elliptical machines, and fitness videos where I just moved and jumped around a lot; diets that cut my calories too low, Atkins, Weight Watchers, you name it, but the results I wanted were elusive. Sure the exercising and diet worked for a little while, but none of it was sustainable.
So, at 40 years old was sort of a turning point for me. I started to hear stories of family and friends being diagnosed with different ailments. I saw family and friends not being able to lift things, or do activities that they used to be able to do. My husband and I just looked at each other and decided that we didn’t want that to be us! We wanted to look fit when we were older. We wanted to be able to move well, and do the things we enjoyed doing. We didn’t want to live with disease!
Realizing that as we age, it was only going to get worse, we decided to start strength training and HIIT style workouts the month we turned 40 years old. For the first time in my life I was lifting weights, and I fell in love with it. But it was also hard, partly because I had never done it before, but also because I’ve never been the most athletic person in the world! But because it was hard, I determined that I wasn’t willing to do all this work if I wasn’t going to look like I actually worked out! Like most of you, my daily protein intake was severely deficient. I was the girl whose plate consisted mostly of carbs and fat! I knew that if I wanted to see visible change, I had to take a hard look at my nutrition!
I started consuming every article I could find on building muscle and burning fat. As I gained knowledge, I began to implement some of the principles I was learning into our everyday meals. Slowly but surely, I began to see real changes in my body composition. For the first time in my life, something I was doing was working! After securing my Precision Nutrition Level 1 Coaching Certification, I began to understand the relationship of protein, carbs and fat. With my newfound knowledge, I was now able to manipulate my body composition to be whatever I wanted!
Now, at 44 years old, I’m in the best shape of my life! I’ve made it my mission to share my journey and knowledge in the hopes that it inspires you take charge of your health, and that at ANY age, ANYTHING is possible!
